Self-Image
If you have a positive feeling about yourself, an initial impression based on "surface" appearance can often be quickly reversed. It is a matter of letting others know "I am myself, I am not my disease." Knowing you are more than your disease is made easier if you know as much about your disease as possiblel Here are some other ways to take control of the negative feelings.
- Practice responses to questions people may ask about your skin.
- Become comfortable hearing yourself talk about psoriasis.
- Join activities and groups, either with other people who have psoriasis or not.
- Reassure yourself that you have a scientific medical problem, not something "weird" or a "curse."
- Expect that you may still have negative experiences, but each time it will get easier.
- Fill your life with the positive - focus on your family, profession and hobbies.
- Remind yourself that there is more to your life than psoriasis and you are much more than just your skin disease.
