How Lung Cancer Affects the U.S. Population: More people die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer. This is true for both men and women. Lung cancer accounts for more deaths each year than breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer combined. Lung cancer is the third most common type of cancer in the United States, after breast cancer and prostate cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2004 173,770 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer and 160,440 people will die from lung cancer
