  Bleeding platelets -- Internet Source

When there is an injury in the wall of a blood vessel (like suffering a paper cut), platelets in the blood gather around the wound and set off a cascade of chemical processes to form a clot that will effectively stop the bleeding. As the platelets play an important role in blood clot formation, having too much or too little of it can be a problem. If you have too much, it is easier for blood clots to form inside blood vessels and cut of blood supply to important organs. If you have too little, you might be at risk for excessive bleeding.
