The course of bipolar disorder - Advances in Psychiatric Treatment
Saunders KEA et al. – Bipolar disorder is arguably a pivotal diagnosis in adult psychiatry bounded by schizophrenia on one side and unipolar depression on the other. It represents a wide spectrum of disorders, all sharing common features of elated and depressed mood. The early descriptions of symptom–free euthymia have long been dismissed and the chronic and enduring deficits associated with the disorder are beginning to be better understood....

Are mood swings a sign of depression? - CNN Health
Many people with bipolar disorder will recognize that they had unusual degrees of moodiness as children and adolescents but usually can identify a time in adulthood when the disorder really took off. This is a chronic condition that affects women more than men and that is characterized by rapid mood shifts between excitement/happiness and anger/irritability/sadness. These shifts typically occur numerous times over the course of a day. But most people with borderline personality disorder do not have clear manic episodes, although depression is very common....

Fronto-Temporal Spontaneous Resting State Functional Connectivity in Pediatric Bipolar Disorder - Biological Psychiatry
Dickstein DP et al. – The authors data indicate that pediatric BD is characterized by altered task–independent functional connectivity in a fronto–temporal circuit that is also implicated in working memory and learning. Further study is warranted to determine the effects of age, gender, development, and treatment on this circuit in pediatric BD....

Ecologically valid cognitive tests and everyday functioning in euthymic bipolar disorder patients - Journal of Affective Disorders
O'Shea R et al. – Ecologically valid tests of cognitive function are sensitive in detecting cognitive impairment in euthymic bipolar disorder. Clinicians should consider using these tests in the recovery phase of bipolar illness, as they may be particularly helpful in showing where rehabilitation should focus....

Risk factors for bipolar disorder - Internet Source
Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder which manifests itself in varying degrees of both manic and depressed moods, depending upon the sufferer – thus the term, "Bipolar". It is, at first, a tricky diagnosis, since it can masquerade as schizophrenia whenever there are audio and/or visual manifestations for the patient. Bipolar–ism can entail paranoia and, at times, be combined with other symptoms, such as are associated with various personality disorders. The disorder may even be misdiagnosed as simple clinical depression, when the "manic pole" is less frequently apparent, even seemingly non–existent....

Predictors of efficacy in lithium augmentation for treatment-resistant depression - Journal of Affective Disorders
Sugawara H et al. – Bipolar disorder, frequency of major depressive episodes, and family history of major depressive disorder/bipolar disorder in a first–degree relative were detected as predictors of lithium augmentation efficacy. Among them, family history of major depressive disorder/bipolar disorder in a first–degree relative was the most reliable predictor of lithium augmentation efficacy for bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder....

Sharma V et al. – Research into postpartum mood disorders has focused primarily on major depressive disorder, bipolar I disorder, and puerperal psychosis, and has largely ignored the study of bipolarity beyond bipolar I disorder. The clinical and research implications of the misdiagnosis of bipolar II depression as major depressive disorder in the postpartum period are discussed....

The role of melatonin in post-partum psychosis and depression associated with bipolar disorder - Journal of Perinatal Medicine
Anderson G – Recent data has highlighted the association of a bipolar disorder (BD) with an increased risk of post–partum psychosis and depression. It is suggested that genetic– and environmental–induced decrease in the levels of melatonin in BD contributes to post–partum disorders. Melatonin may also have some efficacy in the treatment of BD, especially in decreasing the side–effects associated with lithium and the neuroleptics. It is proposed that the optimization of melatonin levels, perhaps in conjunction with optimized vitamin D3 level, would decrease post–partum psychosis and depression associated with BD....
